One thousand kilometers on an electric bicycle
By Craig Morris on August 16, 2016

I have spent two months riding my new e-bike. Here’s what you are missing out on if you don’t have one.

I know this is not directly ebike related, but it is an interesting build and looking outside our ebike work may help stimulate creativity.

They used an Arduino mini computer to run things and used an ebike controller to run a Subaru alternator as a motor!

Coffee Shop / Watts, Volts, Amps, Amp hours, Watt hours...a discussion
« on: August 17, 2016, 05:43:28 pm »
Here is some basic math and information that is good to know when researching ebike batteries, controllers, and motors.

Amps = I
Volts = V
Watts = W
Amp Hours = Ah
Watt hours = Wh     THIS IS THE FIGURE YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT BATTERIES!

Amps x Volts = Watts
Watts/Volts = Amps
Watts/Amps = Volts
Amp hours x Volts = Watt hours

If we analogize these terms to a river, volts would be how many feet the water is going to drop from one point to another, or how fast the water will run, it is really about potential...kinda like water pressure.  Amps would be how big the gates in the dam are and the water behind the dam to be dumped into the river is amp hours (capacity).  Watts is a measurement of the power generated and watt hours tells us how long peak power is going to last.  A controller is what regulates the opening and closing of the gate based upon power requirements.

Project Honeypot is a crowd-sourced database of known internet spammers.  This site is linked to that database and the site's software is programmed to deny spammers in the database use of the site altogether...meaning their bots won't find it.  They can't even see it.  It isn't perfect, but it will go a long way toward keeping the site clean.  So spammers beware!  I've got the big red button to submit you to the Honeypot.

I consider spam any unsolicited promotion of anything unrelated to the topic of the site by someone who contributes nothing else.  If you contribute on-topic information here, you will be given leeway to go "off the reservation" based on your value to the community (number and quantity of on-topic posts).

In 2012, I was hit by a truck while riding my ebike.   Broke 5 ribs, punctured my left lung, broke-separated-dislocated my left shoulder,  broke my neck and had numerous pulled and or torn muscles and ligaments.  It sucked. Bad.  Oh, and I should mention that I didn't have one head injury thanks to my helmet.  Wear a helmet!
I didn't die and I've recovered well and I'm back to riding.  My point is that I never thought something like this would happen to me.  I'm cautious.  I had flashing lights on my bike and was wearing a white T shirt.  I know drivers don't see me so I try to anticipate their actions.  But still, there I was.

My bike did about 20 MPH on the road with me pedaling and I think drivers have an issue with this.  Their experiences that they associate with bicycles tell them that I'm not going as fast as I am.  I'm not what they expect.  My ebike is nowhere near as powerful as others, so I figure the faster you go, the greater this problem becomes.  But consider also that both your and their time to react gets much shorter as you go faster.  It is a problem.  Is it the driver's fault?  Yes, but it doesn't really matter if you are splattered on the road now does it?

So folks, protect yourselves.  Wear bright clothes and run lights and reflectors day or night.  Consider Nori Lights and ride with others if possible.  Look ahead and avoid busy roads if possible.

In most places, (YOU need to check)  the law says your ebike is a bicycle if it goes no more than 20 MPH on flat ground without pedaling.  If yours goes faster than that, it is a motorcycle and you should register it accordingly.  You then must have a motorcycle driver's license.  Get hit by someone when you are going 40 on an unregistered electric motorcycle with only a regular drivers license and YOU will likely be liable because you aren't supposed to be there.

With that said please do not make a post praising irresponsible ebike activity.  An off road monster and all its' tricks is fine,  just don't talk about running it on the freeway.

As cool as it gets.  In order to keep from getting run over by a truck (I did) installing these rim lights (I didn't) will really help drivers see you.

This is where I bought my conversion kit back in 2013.  Doug knows his product and has a wealth of knowledge about ebikes.  You can be sure his kits will perform like he says.
